(26 jul. 1928, Nueva York, N.Y., EE.UU.–7 mar. 1999, Childwickbury Manor, cerca de St. Albans, Hertfordshire, Inglaterra).

Director de cine estadounidense. Comenzó su carrera como fotógrafo de la revista Look (1945–50). Realizó dos documentales antes de dirigir su primer largometraje, Fear and Desire (1953). Se hizo famoso con Senderos de gloria (1957), Espartaco (1960), Lolita (1962), Dr. Insólito (1964) y la internacionalmente aclamada 2001: Una odisea del espacio (1968), que obtuvo un premio de la Academia por mejores efectos visuales. Entre sus películas posteriores se cuentan La naranja mecánica (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), El resplandor (1980), Nacido para matar (1987) y Ojos bien cerrados (1999). Sus filmes se caracterizan por un sereno estilo visual, un meticuloso cuidado con los detalles y un pesimismo desprendido y a menudo irónico.
